Formula 82M
Advanced Topical Formula with Minoxidil for Hair Loss
Formula 82M is a compounded prescription product containing three active ingredients in a non-sticky, non-greasy, propylene glycol–free base:
- Minoxidil (5%) – A vasodilator that increases blood flow to hair follicles, first shown to stimulate hair growth in a landmark 1988 study1. Since its FDA approval that year for Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), minoxidil has remained the leading topical treatment for hair loss.
- Tretinoin (0.01%) – A retinoic acid shown in studies to potentiate the effects of minoxidil234.
- Fluocinolone Acetonide (0.01%) – A mild topical steroid that aims to reduce irritation associated with topical minoxidil use.
Why is Formula 82M Effective?
Minoxidil increases blood flow and oxygen to hair follicles, counteracting follicle dormancy and promoting hair regrowth in responsive individuals. Formula 82M combines minoxidil with a retinoic acid and a mild topical steroid, with the aim of enhancing minoxidil’s absorption and delivery into the scalp and reducing the skin irritation associated with its topical use. Because minoxidil does not directly alter hormone levels, it is often preferred by patients concerned with the potential hormonal side effects of other hair loss treatments56.
Who can take Formula 82M?
Formula 82M is a compounded prescription product available to adults experiencing hair loss. It is not recommended for anyone with known allergies to minoxidil, tretinoin, or fluocinolone acetonide, or for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.

Safety Considerations
The topical application of minoxidil has been shown to help mitigate many of the side effects associated with its oral use (e.g., fast or irregular heartbeat, weight gain, chest pain, shortness of breath, flushing, swelling, and rash, decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual satisfaction, ejaculation disorder, and decreased seminal volume). However, while studies suggest that topical administration can lower these risks, some individuals may still experience side effects. The most frequently reported side effect of 82M is mild skin irritation, typically resolving within the first 2–3 weeks of treatment. Physicians should exercise clinical judgment and ensure that patients understand both the compounded nature of the product and the potential variability in treatment outcomes. Women who are trying to conceive or currently are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use Formula 82M.
Other Considerations
Formula 82M is a compounded prescription product. While it contains FDA‐approved ingredients, this formulation has not been evaluated by the FDA as a standalone product for hair loss. Compounded formulations involving minoxidil should only be prepared by licensed pharmacies for individual patients under physician supervision. Physicians should exercise clinical judgment and ensure informed consent when prescribing compounded or off-label treatments.
